Exhibition 150 years of the Moyano Law, the introduction of experimentality in teaching

In 9 September 1857, the Law of Public Instruction (known as the Moyano Law for the then Minister in the field Claudio Moyano) was passed. It was the first legal text which took upon itself the regulation of the so-called public instruction. The Moyano Law entailed the crystallization of a whole set of ideas inherited from the Enlightenment and then collected in the tenets of liberalism: the need to bring instruction to the greatest number of citizens and the introduction of an experimental-based teaching, which tries to demonstrate the processes of nature without having to resort to faith dogmas, a principle which led to the creation of the so-called “Scientific Offices” in schools.

This exhibition shows us the legacy of the different Scientific Offices created in Galicia when implementing the Law. We will find the scientific instruments used to demonstrate different natural phenomena, mineral and other natural collections, anatomy models, etc.
